To the moon… in search of Truth

Review of Fly me to the Moon, 2024, Film directed by Greg Berlanti.

Great movie! No one is surprised though. Starring certified hotties Scarlett Johanssen and Channing Tatum this movie is simply fun. It’s easy on the eyes with cutesy 60s outfits, smooth cars and mechanics.

Johannsen uses her feminine suave and tact to outsmart smart men without compromising her feminine style. Tatum is a complex man who doesn’t let his traumas and failures get in the way of completing his personal and professional missions.

The plot is very clever and offers a significant critique on the compromises America is willing to make for the sake of PR. Or perhaps it’s not only for The USA but for people generally. What is more important than truth and honesty?

It’s not an easy question. There is nobility in upholding hope over truth. There is nobility in making the unpopular choice to honour truth. We see the difficulty for leaders to care for the spirit of an entire Nation in the face of international conflict. We see the difficulty in facing shameful memories and the choices made for the sake of peace of mind.

Without an anchor (without a Truth) we are left to superstition and fear. But we can hide in this fear! As the story progresses, there is freedom found in truth told. Of course there is a bullet to bite in telling the truth to reach the freedom.

I am struck by how counter cultural the moral of this story is! Well expressed in this single line followed by confession from Johanssen’s character Kelly. She says “The truth is still the truth even if nobody believes it. A lie is still a lie even if everybody believes it.”

Out of context, it makes perfect sense but I see it to be very controversial to the zeitgeist of a subjective reality. I mean a subjective reality that your beliefs of the workings of the universe are your own private business and not to be ‘pushed on other people’.

On the daily I feel as though I am in mourning after the death of an Objective Truth. Of course an objective truth cannot die but there is a denial of its existence.

To speak plainly and draw some distant conceptual parallels , I’m tired of this expectation that religious people should not be expected to try and convert you! Isn’t it in our nature as humans to share what we know and what we believe to be true and good or better? We share our favourite dinner place, the best spot to watch the sunset, the secret beach, our favourite songs… So when it comes to matters of the spirit, the soul, and life beyond the physical, you can rely on me to not only share with you, but try to convince you of what I learn to be the most convincing.

On another note, I quite enjoyed Tatums argument to convince the Conservative Christian Congressman to Vote in favour of the Apollo 11 mission. Rephrased from memory, he says that it is our God-given duty according to Genesis 1:28 to investigate and explore the universe and that doing so will not take away the mystery of divine creation but lead us closer to understanding the vastness of the mystery of divine creation.

Great Movie! Sent me off on a few wild trains of thought:)

5 stars and moons and all the other heavenly bodies.
